Synthesis paper climate gains in the North Sea

In 2017, the North Sea Energy programme mainly focused on assessing the added value of platform electrification. The platforms were assessed and electrification scenarios were optimised for this. An initial assessment was also made for other system integration capabilities, including:

  • Power-to-gas: Power-to-hydrogen is assessed using offshore (on platform and in wind turbine) electrolysis and onshore electrolysis
  • Offshore and onshore conversion of natural gas into hydrogen and CO2 for underground storage
  • Offshore natural gas conversion to electricity
  • Energy storage: assessment of the value of the battery storage offshore

The study also offered perspectives on the role of system integration options in the energy landscape of the future, the macro economy, the environmental benefits of platform electrification and the impact on the human capital agenda.

The online Energy Atlas was first published in 2017.

The research results of the program are summarized in the synthesis document 'Climate gains through system integration in the North Sea'.
